About Me

The first time I was exposed to the art of calligraphy was at my Grandpa's dining room table watching him carefully place letters on parchment paper. It wasn't until several years later that I would pick up a pen of my own and fall in love with the art form. I took my first calligraphy courses at Iowa State University beginning in 1996 with Cheryl Jacobsen, a professional calligrapher from Iowa City. I've also studied with scribes Gretchen Weber and Thomas Ingmire. After graduation from college I worked as a graphic artist for several organizations. During that time I did calligraphy on the side for friends and clients. The love I had for seeing ink on my hands and on paper never left me and in 2001 I decided to begin Cheryl Dyer Calligraphy & Design.

Today, I work out of my home I share with my husband, Kyle, and our two beautiful and artistically inclined children in Omaha, Nebraska. I continue to take classes, attend conferences and workshops to improve my skill and artistic abilities.

I am a member of the Association of Calligraphic Arts, the Calligraphic Arts Guild of Central Iowa and the Omaha Scribes. I teach private lessons as well as group lessons for Metropolitan Community College and Joslyn Art Museum. I've exhibited work at Iowa State University and Nicholas Street Art Gallery in Omaha.

Besides lettering I enjoy (in no particular order): sewing, paper arts, cooking, cutting coupons and grocery shopping, writing and blogging, travel, good coffee, listening, three beverage mornings, skirts and flip-flops, my kid's giggles, my husband's rugged good looks, reading books by talented authors, jelly beans, a glass of good Reisling, 75 degree weather, seeing friends, when my kids go to bed at night, farmer's markets, blue cheese and baguettes, peace & quiet, rock climbing, IKEA, listening to experts and being inspired.
